1. The Village of Saltus

Severian envisions Morwenna injured and mute.  He hears her accuser, Eusebia, before becoming lost in darkness.  Severian reemerges to a memory of the Piteous Gate, where mounted soldiers divide a throng of travelers leaving Nessus.  In the commotion, Severian is separated from Dorcas.  He draws his sword, Terminus Est, to fight through the crowd.  Noticing Master Malrubius and Triskele, Severian realizes that he is dreaming. 

Severian wakes and thinks himself in the dormitories of the Matachin Tower.  Gradually, he becomes aware that he is inside a country inn.  His companion, Jonas, is asleep nearby.  Severian rinses his mouth with wine from a water jug, places the Claw of the Conciliator in his boot, and leaves his room.
