1. Master of the House of Chains

Returning from a public bathhouse, Dorcas describes overhearing gossip about her association with Severian.  Accustomed to the treatment of torturers and their paramours by the public, Severian is indifferent.  

Dorcas expresses concern over Severian’s role as the Lictor of Thrax, the city’s executioner and chief jailor.  Severian defends his position and Dorcas withdraws.
